Scandinavian Yule tree decorations
Straw has historically been the subject of symbolism and magical powers. In pre-industrial times peasants believed that the last sheaf harvested from the field, the ”neken” in Swedish, was inhabited by the grain spirit who gave animals and soil their fertility. This vitality would be utilized, and converted into various objects. Objects that came to be associated with festive times, such as Yule (Christmas), weddings and other parties. For example, straw crosses could be laid under the Christmas table to bless the house and the food, or an Oro (straw crown) with emptied eggs hung over the newlyweds as a wish for good fertility.
At Yule a great variety of objects could be made from straw, and this here is the straw stars. To be hung in the Yule tree (Christmas tree) for fertility and good harvest the coming year!
